17 Miracles is the story of one of the greatest missionaries to have ever lived, Levi Savage (March 23, 1820 – December 13, 1910). The movie, directed by T.C. Christensen, features Jasen Wade in the lead role of Levi, and brings to life the heartrending narrations of his detailed journals, which he diligently maintained from 1852 to 1903.
The movie’s bottom line is that every tragedy brings along with it a multitude of miracles, which Levi discovered as he set off on the journey across the Salt Lake City in 1856, as the sub captain of the Willie Handcart Company. Even though Levi knew that the harsh weather would be a huge roadblock to their mission, and could even cost them their lives, yet he took the plunge and set off with determination. After an entire three months of tribulation, the group finally made it to their destination, but only after 1/5th of them had lost their lives to starvation and freezing. Few lived on to tell the story, and luckily, Levi was one of them. In his journals, he narrates the miracles that made this impossible journey possible, and it is those miracles that are reenacted in this deeply moving film.
The movie tells the story of the Mormon Pioneers in a way that’s never been attempted before, and by the time the movie draws to an end, you’ll realize that life is a lot more profound than any of us can ever imagine. The movie establishes the hidden reality that behind every disaster lies a blessing in disguise and our job is just to lift off the veil, and reveal the blessing!
