Albert Nobbs tells the tale of the life of an Irishwoman, living in the 19th century, who strives hard to survive in a century, when woman’s independence was a taboo. It’s about a woman who pretends to be a man to earn bread and butter. For almost twenty years, this nineteenth century Irishwoman works as a butler, but when her secret comes to the limelight, things start falling apart for this woman.

This gender-bending period drama begins with the life of a loyal woman, who spends a major part of her life in disguise. As a butler, she serves in one of the most esteemed hotels of Dublin. In these thirty years, she searches out other instant ways to earn money in the male dominated society. However, the job at the hotel gives her financial as well as social security. The job also brings solitude to the life of a woman, who dons a three-piece suit to stay strong in the world of men.

One day, she meets a good-looking painter and from here onwards her life changes completely. But she cannot escapes from the lie which she has been carrying from the past three decades. She cannot express her feelings, as she has already been living in the world, where women aren’t allowed to express openly.
