Ben-Hur is the intriguing story of a Jewish man named Judah Ben-Hur. Ben-Hur was one of Jerusalem’s wealthiest merchants in AD 26.
The story commences with the scenes of the return of Ben-Hur’s childhood friend, Messala. Messala, however, is a changed man and is now the commanding officer of the Roman army, which had come with the intention of annexing and ruling over Jerusalem. When a tile from Ben-Hur’s house accidentally falls off and injures the Roman Governor, Messala uses it as an excuse to make an ostentatious display of his power on the local people of Jerusalem. Although Ben-Hur is very angry with this betrayal of his childhood friend, he has no choice but to obey the commands of his new masters. He is exploited, derided and denied water, until he is nearly parched to death. He becomes a great champion charioteer after having been trained by the Roman warriors. One day, all charges against Ben-Hur are dropped and his freedom and riches are returned to him.
The first thing that Ben-Hur does after this, is return to his homeland in search of his family. He meets Messala and promises to forgive him, if only he tells Ben-Hur where his mother and sister were. Ben-Hur is given the misinformation that both his mother and sister are dead.
