Dogtooth

Dogtooth is a dark, nightmarishly surreal, disconsolate verbal and physical comedy, which derives most of the charm from its obstinate characters and their blind beliefs.  

A movie coming from Greek directors, Dogtooth, is the story of an authoritarian family with a strict disciplinarian, obsessed, nearly insane, control freak of a father and mother, and their three zombie-like children. Of the three kids, two are young girls while the son is a forlorn looking young boy. The movie in its initial minutes is completely bewildering and shocking, but great is the impact of its completely bizarre but utterly believable setup of social conditioning. Believe it or not, the children have never been allowed to go outside their house! The children have been fed utter tosh about the world, like being told that zombies are flowers, cats are very powerful creatures which have attacked the brother once, an imaginary brother who lives outside the house. A player enters the house when a young woman named Christina is brought to the house to satisfy the brother’s sexual urges without engaging him in any sort of worldly matters. Unsatisfied with the boy’s choice for sexual intercourse, Christina seeks out the elder daughter and coerces her into performing oral sex on her.

The elder daughter obliges in return for a headband although she is unaware of the significance of what she is doing. The farcical setup continues to shock and mesmerize until the elder daughter trades sexual favors for DVDs of movies like Jaws and Rocky. The crazy patriarch finds out that the elder daughter has watched those movies and immediately expels Christina, and asks the son to choose between his two sisters. To which, he chooses the elder one. The elder one, taking inspiration from the movies, soon plans a daring escape. Will it work? Find out for yourself.
