Director Anthony DiBlasi’s horror venture, ‘Dread’ takes the definition of fear to an all-new level. The movie centers on a high school project on fear, in which a boy named Quaid collaborates with his friend, Stephen, believing that they can create a landmark original thesis, based on the subject of fear.
He believes that a man must face his most dreaded fear, to be able to overcome it. While that may be a perfectly logical theory, it takes a sinister turn when Quaid adopts it in real life a tad too seriously. Quaid’s psychological disturbances come from the fact that he witnessed both his parents being axed to death as a young child. He carries on the traumatic experience as a dark shade to his personality, and incorporates it into his project. He begins to interview students at his school asking them what their deepest fears are, and as each student shares his fear with him, he does all that’s possible to make the student face the fear, no matter to what extent he may need to go. The first victim of his odd behavior is Stephen, whose brother died in a car accident while drunk. Quaid buys a similar looking car and forces Stephen, who’s abstained from driving ever since, to drive it. However, that is just the beginning of it all.
He locks a girl who’s afraid of the smell of meat in a room with a piece of beef, until she’s forced to eat it after it rots. He then spreads naked pictures of a girl who’s afraid of people seeing the birthmarks on her body, driving her to the verge of hysteria, as she frantically bleaches her body and runs around naked with blood oozing through her wounds.
