Hugo is a captivating blend of emotions and fantasy, with the eponymous character, a young boy named Hugo, at its center. Hugo is an orphan, who was taken in by his alcoholic uncle, after the death of his parents. His uncle passes on to him the only skill he’s ever learnt - repairing clocks at the railway station. After his uncle’s death, Hugo carries on his life as a clock worker at the railway station in Paris, living amidst the chaos of the station, and filling his stomach with stolen chunks of food.
The only thing he is passionate about is a broken automaton, left behind by his father. Hugo spends days and nights, trying to repair the mechanical man, going to the extent of stealing train parts to get it working. He is caught in the deed by a grumpy, old man, Papa Georges, who owns the nearby toy shop. He soon befriends Georges’ goddaughter, Isabelle, who is an eccentric young girl and together they begin unraveling the marvels of cinema.
When they finally find the missing heart shaped key, the automaton reveals to them the scene from a classic film, which Hugo recalls hearing about from his father. It turns out that Georges was the mastermind behind the film, but has now disconnected from his past, and is living a distorted, illusionary life. It also turns out that the automaton was his creation, and is the key to linking him to the past that he is still honored for. Watch this mesmerizing account of the journey transcended by cinema!
