Journey to Sundance is directed by Julian Starks and is written by Kiwi Burch, Bill Jacobson and Julian Starks. Many stars have appeared as themselves in the movie, which revolves around getting the answer to the question, ‘What is an Independent Film?’
There have been long discussions for years over this question, but no one has actually been able to come up with an appropriate answer. How do the non-studio movies begin, and what actually makes these movies ‘independent movies’? How are they truly defined? To find out the answers to all these questions, the three film makers- Julian Starks, Bill Jacobson and Jennifer Sorenson embarked on a voyage. They spent five precious years of their lives, visiting the Sundance Film Festival in order to get an appropriate answer to these highly debated questions. Their cameras stand as a witness to the answers of ace film makers, directors, producers and celebrities, who best know the answer to these contentious questions.
These film makers try to know whether it’s a lack of time, money or any other resource, which gives way to independent films. Bill Jacobson, Julian Starks and Jennifer Sorenson didn’t give up until their curiosity was satisfied. On their way, they met many famous personalities like Jennifer Aniston, Bill Jacobson, Tim Coyne, Peter Biskind, James Woods, Chris Moore, Vin Diesel, Jon Christensen, Robert Redford and Courtney Hope, to mention a few, each of whom provides a food for thought over the subject of independent films.
What enables a documentary to stand out from the rest of the crowd? Undoubtedly, the answer lies is an appealing subject matter. Julian Starks’ out-of-the box documentary, Journey to Sundance, takes in to account the very essence of independent filmmaking.
One of the interesting aspects of the film is that its main life source is an on-the-move plot, which develops along with the journey that a group of filmmakers undertake, seeking to find the true definition of independent movie making, as well as its future prospects. I find that the idea of casting industry stalwarts like Jennifer Aniston, Javier Bardem, Peter Biskind and others, to be an extremely useful device of brining about a realistic feel, as far as the subject is concerned. The main storyline is juxtaposed with the presence of Hollywood stars to communicate the dominance of mainstream movies over indies.
