Kinyarwanda

Set in the riveting period of the Rwandan genocide of 1994, Kinyarwanda is the story of life in times of national discord, which takes us into the hearts of four different individuals, joined by a common string of violence.The film explores various efforts that are prevalent during times of war, including love that cannot be taken any further than silent tears shed secretly, and beliefs that shatter on realizing that life is not as glorious as imagined.

The first two people that we get to know are a young couple, who despite loving each other, cannot express their love and be together. The Tutsi woman and her Hutu lover instantly win our hearts with their innocence and pure heartedness. The movie also acquaints us with a resilient female soldier, who has learnt the trick of keeping her emotions under check, and not allowing her separation from her family to come between her duties towards her country. The woman shows us a facet of war which has rarely, if ever, been projected so brilliantly on the big screen.

Her emotional journey, which she goes through without as much as a frown on her face, makes us want to shed our tears for her, and make her experience the feelings of hugging her children, and being comforted by her husband. The movie’s last protagonist is a priest, who is representative of the good in the entire human race, and makes us question the triumph of vices over virtues.
