Reviews :

A portly Panda and a Secret Scroll containing the key to superpowers - doesn’t seem that catchy. Now, flip it over, add some talented actors and a little bit of Angelina Jolie and a whole lot of kung-fu, the result is this slapstick comedy.

Kung Fu Panda surely deserves a place in the all-time list of the best animated movies. The established norms for animated movies state that they should be appeasing and appealing to everyone, from a child to a grown up.  How does a decently violent movie about a portly panda, trying to learn Kung Fu fit the adage of a movie meant for all age groups?

Well, firstly unleash the irrepressible Jack Black as the pudgy panda, Po; and a couple of talented actors to accompany him on a hilarious journey that drives home the clichéd point that good always triumphs over evil. Well that’s Kung Fu Panda in a nutshell, for you. Trust me, there’s a lot more to this movie than just the regular fare of slapstick comedy and some stale jokes.

First of all, let’s talk about the stupendous animation techniques used in the movie. This movie is easily amongst the best animated movies produced by the DreamWorks Studio and it easily surpasses anything put up by their rivals, Pixar Studios. Influenced by the legendary Asian movies like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero, the production crew has used breakthrough animation techniques, combined with a relatively new lighting method to create contrasting emotions through changing colors.

Po’s story begins when he is accidentally named as the recipient of the fabled Dragon Scroll, by the Old Master. What follows is a rib-tickling turn of events, as Po is put though a harsh regime to train in Kung Fu, so that he can fight the villain Tai Lung. The vibrancy of Jack Black’s seemingly wild manner of speaking, takes a seemingly overplayed Master-Teacher scene to a new level. The conclusion scene, where the Master realizes that Po is motivated by food more than anything else, is the highlight of Po neing tagged as the gluttonous Kung fu fighter.

The presence of Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan and Lucy Liu is an added bonus, as their characters mingle with each other in a perfectly amicable way, with everyone getting ample screen time. Ian McShane as Tai Lung is the arch villain, the diabolical snow leopard. He is convincing enough to earn rave reviews. The final confrontation between Po and Tai Lung is a wee bit cheesy; the kids will love it, but there is an overwhelming sense of fruition when it is finally over.

The viewers feel connected to the chubby, shy and humble panda; Po. Jack Black and the rest of the cast, turn this simple story into a complete treat, replete with embarrassingly hilarious cock-ups, witty retorts and pure mad fun. Something for the whole family to sit down and eventually end up, rolling on their rear ends!
