Drug addiction can only mean destruction and irrecoverable devastation. But, what if a group of people is adamant upon tasting that ruination willingly?
Magic Trip is a docudrama based on the life of Ken Kesey, an author, and his ‘Merry Band of Pranksters’. Together, they set on a journey where they try their hands at a variety of drugs to feel the consequent high. This movie marks a road trip by this nihilistic group of friends who go about enjoying the ‘trip’ all the while during their visit to different destinations. While journeying the roads, they love to get inebriated, tripping all over, and feeling the high of the extreme stimulants. However, a watch at this tableau provokes you to ask several questions. What did they get out of such an experience? Were they trying to discover America in their grogginess, to overlook the unwanted elements of the country, which they couldn’t have accepted in their normal condition? Were they trying to outclass the set traditions and cultural norms of the country by taking the support of these hallucinogens? However, in actuality, it’s nothing of this sort, as the whole group just indulged in this activity to seek mere pleasure and a hedonistic experience of a lifetime.
Thence, the docudrama conveys a message, that you just can’t escape the realities of life through drugs and alcohol. And, if you let intoxication take a toll on your life, like Ken Kesey did, you will end up facing the consequences.
