Comedy is ubiquitous and so slips pretty easily into situations that may not have been funny. Mary Maroni would clearly vouch that she never considered her situation to be funny; it could be everything but funny. But no matter what Mary suggests, funny it certainly is!
She was living a quiet life with her family, making cupcakes and making lives of people sweeter by doing that. But her daughter must have found the mundane acts too mundane and thought it’s time to don the shoes of a mischievous kid. Even before Mary could get the gist of all that happened, she is one of the contestants in run for the position of Mayor. Well, it would have remained a funny experience if the Mayoral election results had not declared Mary Maroni as the new Mayor of Delaware. Having no knowledge of how these things run and what she would be doing, Mary sets out to start a new life. Although she is confused, she has brought herself to a position where the deep-rooted corruption and cronyism that Delaware is suffused with, has made her look up at the whole thing as a chance to make things better.
She begins taking decisions, which are quite different to those Delaware has been used to. Her unusual style brings people of all types at her doorstep – friends, enemies and followers. She earns the nickname, Mayor Cupcake (the name of the film), and goes about hitting the prevailing system and notions hard by simply believing in her instincts and her oddball style of governance. And there lies your comedy!
