Reviews :

Mother is the directorial venture of Bong Joon-Ho, who is counted as among the most promising Korean directors. His earlier creative outputs include the likes of well known horror film, ‘The Host’. Mother is a murder mystery that’s sprinkled with a variety of emotional hues throughout the length of the movie.

The film is credited with being South Korea’s official entry for the Academy Award in the foreign language film category. The film reverberates with the emotions of a mother striving to save her only son from the clutches of an imminent peril. Hye-ja (Kim Hye-ja) is a single mother struggling to nurture her psychosomatic 27 year old son, Do-joon (Won Bin).

She manages to keep the house running by selling herbs and administering acupuncture treatment to all those in need. Meager means of living, coupled with a not so normal young son, are burden enough for the lady, who still bears it by summoning courage from the deepest reaches of her being. The story takes a plunge into mystery with the appearance of a young girl, Moon Ah-jung (Na Mun-Hee) whom Do-joon follows in a supposed state of hallucination.

Furor is created when this girl is found murdered and the presence of a ball is detected on the site. This ball belongs to none other than Do-joon! The film has been woven beautifully with the occurrence of sequences at opportune moment, striking all the right chords with the viewers. It extracts one’s sympathy when Do-joon is falsely implicated in the case and faces apathy at the hands of police and judiciary, both exhibiting a reckless attitude.

The film gives a glimpse of the phlegmatic outlook that the authorities adopt just because a person is unable to defend himself owing to unavoidable frailties. From here onwards, the director has managed to take the story to an altogether new high.  The entire cast has done a stupendous job by getting into the skin of their characters and portraying them in a sensitive manner.

Hye-ja does drive empathy as a mother, whose son is being subject to unnecessary trauma; Do-joon can cause a tear or two to fall from your eyes with his naïve outlook on life. The film scores majorly with its superbly crafted culmination. The mother becomes the only defendant of her son and brings forth evidence is support of her belief. Ultimately, it’s a story of a stoic woman who did not give up in the face of obstacles, but surmounted them through sheer grit and courage.
