Nostalgia For The Light

The movie is a story of humans’ never-ending quest of finding answers to life. Set up in Atacama Desert, Chile, it is a documentary that follows a group of astronomers that has come together to peer into the cosmos.

They track the clear skies night and day. On the other hand, there is a dive into past.  Atacama has darker secrets that rule the air of this arid place. It is a region that has been a mute witness and caretaker of human remains. It is the dark hole of Chile. Nostalgia for the Light portrays it as a haunting harbinger of the remains of the prisoners, which were buried here by the Chilean army. The movie surges ahead with two plots, one trailing the astronomers while the other tracking the search of the ones who were buried here. It highlights the search for the remains of the dead ones, after 25 years of their death. A grueling hunt is on to trace loved ones, who faced the aftermath of dreadful mutiny of 1970s.

As the astronomers are busy looking at the celestial happenings, the ground is replete with women searching for their family members. The movie tries to interweave its plot with the stark difference that lies between the outer world quest of the researchers, and the earthly search of common folk. One group is on a hill top while the other is scouring the desert for a slice of ancestral history. An engaging plot, to say the least!
