Oranges And Sunshine

Release Date : 1 Apr, 2011
Duration : 105 Min
Director : Jim Loach
Genre : Drama
Plot :

This drama movie epitomizes the unflinching determination and courage of Nottingham-based social activist named Margaret Humphreys.

Oranges and Sunshine also brings to light the corruption and misuse of power by the British government, and it is only because of the iron-will of the social worker that common people get to see the ugly face of politics. When Margaret tries to find the reason behind the increasing exodus of children from United Kingdom, she unearths one of the long hidden secrets of the people at the helm of affairs. To her astonishment, thousands of children are being sent out of the country by abolishing their parental records. The helpless children are ferried to commonwealth countries, including Australia, with fake promises of providing oranges and sunshine to them. But in reality, all of them are subjected to hard manual labor and life of utter confinement. Margaret stands against this injustice inflicted on the helpless souls and succeeds to crack the government promoted cruelty. Oranges and Sunshine is a story of the minors oppressed at the hands of the institution, which is meant for their wellbeing, and not abuse.  The drama film also exemplifies the embodiment of truth and justice through the convincing depiction of a real social servant.

The inspiring tale of Margaret, who acts for the cause of the weak and literally voiceless children, leaves behind an imprint of what protest against oppression can actually do. Get hooked to Oranges and Sunshine to witness one of the relentless battles against tyranny and misgovernance.

Reviews :

Oranges and Sunshine is a movie that highlights the social evil that bloomed in the United Kingdom in the 1950s. It’s the story of a social worker Margaret Humphreys (Emily Watson), who unravels a murky scandal, sending ripples all across.

Crude facts come to light with the startling revelations of what goes behind the forced child migration in UK. Jim Loach, the director of the film has weaved the story really well by merging real happenings with an emotional drama. Emily Watson has done a brilliant job bringing on-screen a myriad of emotions; ranging from probity, adroitness, empathy to a sense of responsibility. It’s a sincere effort to bring to fore a social evil that was under wraps for long.
