Precious is a movie that revolves around a woman trying hard to overcome her stifling existence and start life afresh. Claireece ‘Precious’ Jones (Gabourey Sidibe) is a sixteen year old girl whose life has been made a virtual hell by her own parents. The film begins on a very morose note, providing a glimpse into the brutalized condition of Precious.
The backdrop of the film is set in the precincts of Harlem in the 1980s, focusing on the malice of spread of AIDS as an epidemic. Precious is pregnant for the second time owning to her falling victim to her father’s incestuous brutalization. Her mother Mary (Mo’Nique) also does not harbor any soft corner for her. This mom goes around with a reckless attitude towards her daughter and her Downs’ Syndrome inflicted grandchild. The story unravels a sort of apathy one is subjected to, due to the circumstances; while some become a victim of it, others try to rise above it. Plot soon touches a high when social workers mark an entry into the film.
Precious’ expulsion from the public school yields way for her entry into the GED prep school for troubled girls. Precious’ fate, for the first time, brings her face to face with a person who actually cares for her. It’s Blu Rain (Paula Patton), Precious’ teacher, who tries to pull her out of an existence that can be called hellish (for the want of a worse term). Based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, this film adaptation by Lee Daniel gives an insight into the abuse that women are subjected to; often at the hands of people closely related to them.
The film strikes the right chord with the feminist’s notion in bringing forth the malady as well as solution to the quagmire. But mental bruises are far harder to heal, and when a large part of one’s life has been a target of physical and mental torture, it’s arduous to bring that person back to normalcy. Kudos to the cast members for their portrayal of the characters with an intensity, that would surely leave an impression on the viewers’ mind. While the movie is a stark reminder of the evil that surrounds us, it does provide a ray of hope, a possibility of a future away from all the darkness.
