Super is a dark comedy movie, that revolves around a normal man, Frank, who turns superhero. He is the guy next door, who is broken-hearted after his marriage gets ruined.

Frank finds his wife deserting him in the love of a drug dealer, who is successful in snatching his wife, with all the glitter and smart thinking. Realization strikes him hard, as he gets agitated and ready to take revenge from the drug dealer, who destroyed his marriage and took away his wife. His plan to take revenge from the drug dealer involves his conversion to a DIY superhero, The Crimson Bolt. In his quest to win his wife back, he also gets a sidekick ‘Boltie’. This character borders on madness and works in a comic store. Nevertheless, she pitches in to help Frank, setting off with him on a mission to bring back his wife and punish this drug dealer. Frank as The Crimson Bolt, roams around the corners of streets of the town to win the love of his wife.

He harbors a feeling of revenge as well as social good and attempts to bring down the evil empire of this drug dealer, who prides himself with nefarious activities. Frank takes it upon himself to serve justice and punish criminals. He takes up arms against all sorts of evil that includes everyone from child molesters to drug dealers. Frank and Boltie come up with strange yet interesting ideas, while they strive to track down the drug dealer and make him suffer for his misdeeds.

Frank D’Arbo (Rainn Wilson) is your guy-next-door with Sarah (Liv Tyler) as his wife, and a lowlife attitude. One day, Sarah leaves him for a suave drug-dealer Jacques (Kevin Bacon). Frank goes on to garb himself in funny-looking attire and becomes The Crimson Bolt, the crime-fighting hero. In this hilarious comedy of errors, director James Gunn brings out a decent storyline about a misguided man who takes it upon himself to fights crime, albeit for a different reason.

The plot appears to be clichéd but the story that has The Crimson Bolt and his sidekick Boltie (Ellen Page), forces the viewer to leave the stereotypes behind, and enjoy Rainn Wilson’s performance as a loser-turned-hero and the awkwardly funny Ellen Page. There is something about this self-styled hero when he goes after Jacques and other bad guys with a wrench! It forces the viewers to cheer for him, though getting Sarah back is a totally different question.
