Surrogate Valentine is an indie movie that stands to destroy all the pre-conceived notions that anybody may have regarding music.
A through and through enjoyable movie, Surrogate Valentine brings to you the story of an indie musician, who is trying his luck to make an impression at the ‘big level’. Also, what makes this movie stand out from the others is that it’s made in black and white; the lack of colors gives it a nice overall coat of enigmatic appeal. Actor Goh Nakamura plays himself and also happens to be the co-writer of the script. The turn in the movie comes, when Goh is approached by somebody who wishes to make a movie, which almost resembles his own life. He is asked to make the lead of the movie learn to play the guitar. Now the lead of the movie – Danny- finds it hard to learn the instrument, and thinks that trying to mimic Goh, is what will make him perfect.
This is the point that works wonders for the movie - the interaction between these characters and their chemistry is what seals the deal in favor of this flick. Light, funny and amusing, the movie is a heartwarming story that doesn’t lie heavy on your head, and before you realize it, you pretty much laugh your way through most of it.
