Reviews :

Of the long list of heist movies, Takers by director John Luessenhop is another one with a basic plot and some unexpected twists, with some credible performances to elevate the whole movie. Needless to say, that this list is not a very long one.

First up, credits to John Luessenhop for writing a decent storyline himself and secondly, executing it in a lucid, presentable manner. His involvement in the creative processes in the pre-production stage means that every character is detailed to the smallest bits and pieces.

About the movie, well, one of the highlights is the maverick cast assembled by the producers. Paul Walker is playing John, member of a bank robbing crew. The veteran actor Idris Elba plays the role of Gordon, the El Capitan of the motley crew and the other members include Hayden Christensen as AJ.

While Gordon’s crew is shown to be lying low in the beginning after their partner Ghost, played by rapper T.I, is arrested. Matt Dillon again plays a police officer; Jack Welles, in what could be termed as a limited role. The movie kicks off on a note of suspicion as the sudden return of Ghost has surprised everyone. Especially, Jake and Ghost’s ex-girlfriend Lily, they are in a relationship since Ghost’s incarceration and are about to get married.

Before the crew even plan on their next seed, the seed of doubts are planted in the viewer’s mind over Ghost’s integrity.

Before going any further, I’d like to mention the aesthetics of the movie. Takers is extremely well shot, and the director makes the use of rapidly changing color tones, to accentuate the display of contrasting emotions. The resonating colors add certain measure of dynamicity to the overall feel of the movie plot, and increase the effectiveness of certain scenes by removing the grey overtones, making the overall tone vibrant.

Then again, Takers could be a little less exciting for people going to watch the movie in anticipation of a crime-thriller classic. It is a bit mellowed, not being an out-and-out hit-and-chase movie. The shades to all the characters are not as balanced as they should be. But the personal problems of every character add to the realism of the story, making the characters appear more fragile and humane.

Ghost convinces the crew for a 25 million dollar bank heist but it goes horribly wrong as Jack and Eddie catch up with Gordon and the rest of the crew, where Eddie is shot by Jesse. Soon, the crew realizes that they were set up by Ghost, and the sequence of vengeance and conceit begins. This whole has been executed intriguingly and makes for the somewhat subdued pace of the thrill element in the film.

Director John Luessenhop handles the action sequences in a rather overt way. The fast-paced action sequences just whiz by you at breakneck speeds amidst actions of intrigue and deceit. Watch this movie for a decent storyline, excellent performances by Paul Walker, Matt Dillon and Idris Alba and some excellent camerawork.
