How many times has it happened, that you prayed to God for help regarding something you are struggling with, and God sent you an angel to make things all right? It may sound bizarre to you, but this is what happens to Bishop Henry Brougham in The Bishop’s Wife!
Bishop Henry is trying tirelessly to get a new building constructed for the cathedral where he preaches. He has been struggling to convince sponsors to help him in his noble cause. In fact, he gets so engrossed in his ambition to get the new building made, that he neglects his other more important duties, such as those towards his followers and towards his wife, Julia. Julia is not very happy with Henry, as he never spends any time with her. But one fine day, God sends an angel named Dudley to help Henry sort things out in his life. Dudley reveals his identity in front of Henry. He approaches some wealthy elite people of the society and convinces them to donate money. But ironically, he motivates them to donate for the sake of more beneficial purposes, like providing food, shelter and clothing to poor people, rather than towards the cathedral construction!
Dudley creates some magic in Henry’s world by making him realize what his priorities should rightly be. He rekindles love between Henry and Julia, decorates the Christmas tree of the Brougham’s instantly and gets a sermon typed for Henry, without his knowledge. When Dudley has completed his job of showing Henry the right path, he disappears from his life, erasing all memory of his very existence.
