Darkness had never enveloped Gotham City the way it does in The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan carries forward the dark tone that was so well set by this movie’s prequel, Batman Begins. The screen threatens to explode with something much more than sinister. You know you have got one of the most malicious villains ever, as Heath Ledger swaggers onto the screen as a grinning, yet menacing Joker.
This is a movie that seems to be inclined towards portraying evil at its purest. The leering, painted face of Joker is a face that makes for a perfect nightmare. You know he is not a ghost, yet he will send shivers down your spine. At one point of time, it looked like he would win over Bruce Wayne and James Gordon.
Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent doles out a brilliant performance, exploring both the extremes of evil and goodness. The final sequences that see him in hand-to-hand combat with Christian Bale as Bruce/Batman are mind-blowing. Christian is excellent as always. With The Dark Knight, he makes it tougher for us to imagine any other actor beneath the mask.
Angst and loneliness threaten to take over Batman’s self in this one. I was shocked, simply aghast, as Joker unleashed horror on the streets. He won several award nominations like the Golden Globe, BAFTA and Academy Award for his splendid performance. The way he takes over Harvey Dent and makes him rave as a madmen is indeed scary. Heath Ledger has immortalized the Joker forever.
Maggie Gyllenhaal as Rachel Dawes delivers a balanced performance. She takes over the role effortlessly, making the viewers forget that Katie Holmes played Rachel in the prequel. Wally Pfister is perfect as the cinematographer. The highly exciting chase sequence that brings Joker face to face with Batman is one of the most unforgettable chase sequences in history. He deserves praise as the man who made it look so seamless when Batman whizzed past the startled onlookers in a Lamborghini.
Christopher Nolan, with The Dark Knight, has set another milestone for action movies. The dark, the sinister and the evil; everything devilish seems to be packed together in this movie. The heart-rending scene of Rachel’s death and Harvey’s rage are just some of the highpoints of The Dark Knight. I can put a bet that you would go uneasy the next time you see someone flipping a coin in the air – it would make you remember the lopsided grin of the two faced one as he flipped a coin to decide over his next victim’s fate. The Dark Knight stands as much for Joker as it does for Batman. You must have heard of the word ‘superhero’. With this movie, explore what a ‘supervillain’ is.
A befitting villain for a superhero seems to be the underlying theme of The Dark Knight!
