The First Grader is an incredibly inspirational tale of an old man, who after sacrificing his entire life for the freedom of his country, finally decides that it’s never too late to dream. Set in the backdrop of Kenya, the movie showcases the wave of hope that spreads through the country when the Kenyan government announces that it shall provide free education to all children.
While many children delightfully spring at the chance of being able to read and write, there’s one unlikely contender for the scheme- the eighty-something-old, Maruge, a veteran soldier who was one of the Mau Mau fighters during the British rule in Kenya. Maruge leaves his parents astounded, as he announces his desire to learn what he’s been deprived of all through his life- the ability to read and write. Even though many ridicule him, and some even object to his admission in the local school, there’s one teacher who marvels at his determination and spirit, and takes on the responsibility of making his dream come true.
The movie is based on a real life story, and captures some candid moments on the camera, as the village children stare in awe at the cameras and the crew. As we watch the deep bonds that form between Maruge and his young classmates, we learn that age is no bar when it comes to friendship. Maruge’s journey from the harsh detention camps of the British invaders to the intellectual setting of a classroom is a heartwarming one that establishes the fact that nothing is impossible to achieve. For him, education is the biggest treasure, and watching him fighting against all odds to attain this one priceless treasure is an experience not worth missing!
