The Way

Directed by Emilio Estevez, The Way is an American drama film that has been set to honour The Camino de Santiago, a Christian pilgrimage route, which is also known as ‘The Way of St. James’.

Tom, a doctor by profession, is grieving the loss of his estranged son, who is annihilated in Pyrenees during a storm, while he was treading on The Camino. Well, in order to recover the body of his dear son, the father embarks on a ride to France, the place where his son breathed his last. Initially, Tom’s intentions accompany the retrieval of his son’s body only, but later he decides to embark on the same journey that his brilliant son chose to undertake, in order to discover the real meaning of life; and of course, to pay homage to the departed soul. Thus, while walking on the ancient devout trail to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain, Tom confronts a number of pilgrims from around the world, who being all broken are there to seek a concrete meaning to their lives.

Filled with mixed feelings of grief & content, eventually the father discovers his inner self. His travel to The Camino proves out to be worthwhile, as he gets to understand his son in a better way. Also, the father obtains the meaning of his son’s last words that “there is a big divergence between the life we live and the life we opt!” Well, if you’re also in some dilemma regarding your life, the movie certainly makes for an answer to all of your questions!
