Reviews :

There it is, the third part of the story of the eternal foes, the Autobots and the Decepticons, is out there. And here, you can really judge whether it’s worth a shot or not. Titled as the Dark of the Moon, the third, and probably the final part in the Transformer series, is loaded with some heavy-duty action, glamour, deception, and cheeky Star Wars references.

Dark of the Moon picks up on the one of the most important events in the history of mankind- the landing of the Apollo 11 spacecraft on the moon in 1969. This reference to a historical fact, which merges seamlessly with the universe depicted in the movie, adds a significant level of detail and interest. This, at first, appears minor, yet is the first thing that will catch the eyes of the viewer. Understanding the significance of Apollo 11 landing, Dark of the Moon takes a Dan Brown-like twist, and it is slowly revealed that the landing was in fact a ploy to uncover what is supposedly a crashed alien craft on the dark side of the moon!

Thanks to Michael Bay, the incumbent director, we’ve grown accustomed to the smashing and bashing style of action, heavy-weaponry, and the sights of cities being pulverized. But this time, Michael Bay (may the Lord bless him!) brings up a gradual, tense buildup, where events in 1969 suddenly take a great precedence. This actually elevates the central character, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) to a level where his cockiness, impatience, and brooding, is understood and well received.

Sam is out of college, and has a new girlfriend, Carly (played by Rosie Huntington). Sam’s frustration is mostly directed towards his girlfriend and her promiscuous boss, Dylan Gould (Patrick Dempsey). On the other hand, Sam’s Autobot mates discover something which was probably meant to remain a secret. This promptly drives a wedge between them and humans. It’s here that new members such as the menacing looking Wreckers, Dino, Que, are introduced which adds more pizzazz to the movie. Little do the Autobots know that it’s a trap setup by the Decepticons!

There were countless viewers, who were left disappointed by the incoherence in the previous movie, but this time around, the characters are more tightly knit and juxtaposed with the ongoing fight sequences pretty nicely. A word about the special effects here; they are better than most of the things we have seen so far. The appearance of all the Transformers is more detailed, the sound effects are more vivid and impactful, especially in some scenes where the sounds of metal clashing, is distinct and clear.

In the fight sequences, however, Michael Bay retains his obsession with destroying whole cities and this time, he is going to destroy a good portion of downtown Chicago! The whole shebang is impressive and majestic, with the screenplay playing an important role in keeping the special effects significant. But, the special effects are not the only thing to enjoy as Sam Turturro and Ken Jeong add a decent amount of comic-relief with what they do best, make fun when alien-sized weapons are whizzing around.

The British beauty, Rosie Huntington, while adding the much needed glamour to the movie, needs to improve her acting, and Patrick Dempsey steals the show as the slick-looking bad guy. All in all, Dark of the Moon qualifies to be the best movie in the franchise so far, and the 3D version packs a bigger punch!
